Staff Pensacola Angling Community Rallies for Relief
While Pensacola residents felt some of Hurricane Katrina's wrath, they know they were fortunate. That's why Southern Kingfish Association pro angler Steve Ennis and his friends created a local volunteer effort to purchase needed goods in Pensacola and drop ship them to the Salvation Army and Red Cross in Biloxi and Gulfport.
"We are so close to the affected area (only a 90-minute drive). We know the waters relatively well, so initially a couple of us thought of running our boats over to the area to assist in rescue operations," Ennis wrote in an e-mail Friday. "But after considering the logistics and the topography, along with the reality that we would be putting ourselves in great danger, we abandoned that idea."
Instead, Ennis contacted friends, including Nix Daniel, who operates Christian Ministries, Inc. Daniel made the non-profit organization available for the hurricane relief effort. Volunteers will accept cash donations, which they will use to purchase supplies. To contribute, send a check to Christian Ministries, Inc., P.O. Box 911, Pensacola, FL 32591. For information, contact Ennis at 850-432-1800 or steve@theennisco.com .
"We all have been heartbroken as we view the unbelievable losses in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama," Ennis wrote. "We are certainly still dealing with a real mess recovering from Ivan and Dennis. But we are collectively in great shape compared to these poor souls to our west."
