Bond In Investing Savings The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission, citing a history of lax safety at the Salem nuclear facility, issued plant operators a scathing rebuke this week, giving them 30 days to draft sweeping changes in safety procedures.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Agency said Thursday that it will give potassium iodide to states that want to stockpile the medicine in case of an attack against a nuclear power plant. The drug has been shown to protect the body's thyroid gland if taken soon after radiation exposure. Rep. Edward J. Markey ( Mass.), who has long criticized what he terms inadequate safety provisions at nuclear power plants, is among several lawmakers who have urged stricter security measures at the plants since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Nuclear plants, which rank among the nation's most closely guarded facilities, are of particular concern because an attack could spew radioactive contamination over an area covering hundreds of square miles.
Bond Investment Toledo Toledo In a letter issued Wednesday, the NRC told PSEG Nuclear to "address any situations that significantly detract from maintenance of a strong safety conscious work environment."
The plant is designed to accommodate the failure of a tube, said Glenn Meyer, NRC branch chief for the Salem plants. Thursdays meeting, however, focused on a new NRC committee report on steam generators that raises the question of whether a single rupture could cause a chain reaction of broken tubes. In the event of gross failure of multiple generator tubes, more water could escape through steam vents than the plant is designed to replace, said Dave Lochbaum, a nuclear safety engineer with the Union of Concerned Scientists in Washington, D.C.
James Bond Trading Card NRC regional administrator Hubert Miller said regulators doubt PSEG Nuclear's ability to effectively address safety concerns.
Compared to oil and nuclear energy, wind and solar energy are much safer. They do not pollute. They do not contribute to global warming. Radiation is not a threat, and they are inexhaustible. Nuclear power presents a danger that no other energy source does. With Sept. 11 fresh in our memories, What would happen if terrorists were to fly airliners into a nuclear power plant Such an attack could disable the plants safety systems or damage the containment building and result in a massive spread of radiation. Such a catastrophe would render a large area of our country uninhabitable and this risk makes the construction of any new nuclear plants reckless and senseless. I dont believe that any more of them should ever be built.

(Axcess News) sponsored meeting in Moscow today aimed at reinforcing nuclear safety and security around the world. The meeting was prompted by the threat of nuclear terrorism and risk of accidents at atomic power stations. The International Conference On Effective Nuclear Regulatory Systems, organized by the UN International Nuclear Energy Agency (IAEA), was the first of its kind for senior regulators and nuclear technologists to come together and examine global challenges and solutions in the wider context of nuclear and radiation safety and security.

Chic Cannon, a spokesman for plant operator PSEG Nuclear, said the level of tritium in the water was minuscule. "It's well, well under what we have in our illuminated wristwatches, " he said. Cannon also said the three generators at the Lower Alloways Creek complex are operating at full power. PSEG Nuclear reported the leak Thursday, saying a test found 69, 000 picocuries of tritium per liter in a well outside a spent fuel pool building. The state's limit is 20, 000 picocuries per liter.
Bond Terms Trading The NRC gave PSEG Nuclear 30 days to conduct an internal analysis and issue a public report. Within two weeks of that report Miller said NRC regulators want to meet with PSEG Nuclear to settle all qualms.

Bond Greenville Greenville Miller said the NRC undertook the probe due to "various allegations and inspections over the past few years" and questioned present and former employees during its course.
Trading Stock And Bonds According to one source, who requested anonymity, federal investigators began looking into plant safety following a damning internal report buried by PSEG.
Bond Investing Municipal Reaction to the news varied.
Basis Bond Finance Hill In a statement issued Friday, E. James Ferland, chairman of the Public Service Enterprise Group, parent of PSEG Nuclear, said it has started the review. The company has made several management changes to correct the situation and will enact any recommendations to come out of the report, according to Ferland.
Bond Explained Terms Trading "The NRC's letter addresses workplace environment issues that we have been fully aware of for a period of time," he said in the written statement. "We must work diligently to continue this improvement in the workplace environment and believe we have the resources and organization to do so."

Bond Houston Houston Norm Cohen of the UNPLUG Salem campaign again called for the government to halt operations at the Salem reactors until all safety issues are resolved.
Stock Bonds Day Trading "It's an ongoing mindset there of human error, what we call the safety culture ... Can I claim the plant is going to melt down tomorrow? No I can't say that," said Cohen, who called Ferland's response to the letter "the height of arrogance."
Bond Corporate Investing "It's a first step. But it's not enough." Democratic Sen. Stephen Sweeney of West Deptford said there needs to be greater oversight of PSEG Nuclear's operations at the plant.
Investment Bond Uk "Everybody has great concerns. I think the state or (Board of Public Utilities) should make sure they are operating at the level they need to operate at," Sweeney said. "If they were given a scathing letter, how did it get to that point and how long have things been bad?"

Bond Fixed In Income Investing The news is the latest hit the Salem operators have taken.
Bond Dayton Dayton Investment More than a year ago radioactive waste on a worker's shoe exposed a leak at the plant, leading regulators to conclude radioactive tritium leaked from a cooling pond used to store spent nuclear fuel.
Bond Management Market Risk The company, the NRC and state Department of Environmental Protection all confirm some quantity of tritium leached into nearby groundwater. But exactly how much tritium was released and whether any of it migrated into the local aquifer remain at issue.
