Prior to joining United in 1993, Maher was a partner in the Chicago law firm of Mayer, Brown & Platt. She also has served as the director of the Securities Department for the state of Illinois. She holds a juris doctorate degree and a bachelor's degree in economics, both with honors, from Loyola University in Chicago. Maher is a member of the American Bar Association. Maher serves on the Planning Committee for Northwestern University's Ray Garrett, Jr. Corporate and Securities Law Institute. Maher is also president and a director of the Illinois Humane Society for children, and is also a Board member for the United Center Community Economic Development Fund, and the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago. She is a former chairman of the Chicago Bar Association Securities Law Committee and was recognized by Crain's Chicago Business as one of its "40 under 40" leading business executives in 1997.
