Records Fall At IIAC Indoor Track & Field Invitational
Date 2/27/1997 12:00 AM | Topic: Sports The men and women's track teams competed this past Saturday in the first annual IIAC Indoor Invitational, held at Luther. The men finished second with 135 points behind Wartburg who won the meet with 181 points. The women won the meet with 246 points followed by Wartburg with 196 points.
The men broke two records on Saturday. The 4x200m relay team of Andy Henderson ('97), Jeff Rohlwing ('98), Wade Paulson ('97), and Chris Cinnamo ('98) set a new school record of 1:32.94. In the 4x400m relay Nathan Neuhart ('99), Henderson, Jon Potter ('98), and Cinnamo set a school record of 3:26.44. Other outstanding performances included Andy Henderson 's first place finish in the 600m, followed closely by teammate Aaron Holtebeck ('98) who was second in the same race. Mike Walters('99) finished second in the long jump and Dan Davis ('98) won the pole vault competition.
Record were also broken in several events for the women. Turena Johnson, senior standout in the distance events, broke two records while qualifying automatically for Indoor Nationals. She won the 1500m in a time of 4:39.30, which automatically qualified her for Nationals in that event, and later cruised to an easy victory in the 3000m as well. She set forum records in both events as well as a school record in the 1500m. Jean Nietz ('97) also had an incredible day for the Norse. She won the 400m enroute to setting a forum record in the event, tied th school record in the 200m, and won the 55m hurdles. Her best performance came at the end of the meet however, when she overcame a 20m Wartburg lead in the last leg of the 4x400m relay to win the final event of the day!
Other strong performances for the women include first place finishes by Jess Ellis ('98) in the 20 lb weight throw with a throw of 44 '2" which provisionally qualified her for the National meet, Beth Gower ('97) in the triple jump, and Amie Seibenaler ('99) in the high jump. Second place performances included Kat Shaner ('98) in the 5000m, Dena Krambeer ('97) in the 600m, Meg Staton ('97) in the 1000m, Jess Ellis in the shot, with a throw in this event which also met provisional qualifying standards for Indoor Nationals, Susan Doorenbos ('98) in the long jump, and Evelyn Sarpong ('99) in the triple jump.
Most of the team will not compete again until the outdoor season starts on March 22 at the Augustana Invitational. However, a few athletes will compete this Friday at the Cyclone qualifier in an attempt to qualify for the National meet. The National Meet will be held the weekend off March 7-9 at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
