The provincial or territory health insurance plans we all enjoy usually only cover a portion, if any, up to the amount it would have cost for the same emergency medical attention in your home province. Many emergency health care services outside of Canada cost much more than your provincial health insurance pays if they're covered. You will be responsible for paying the amount not covered by your province's health insurance plan. That's why, even your provincial health care plans often recommend you get private travel medical insurance when heading out of the country.

Bond Investment Toledo Toledo (AXcess News) Washington - Following the the release of a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report which finds that a handful of large carriers dominate the small group insurance market, Senators Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME), Christopher Bond (R-MO) and James Talent (R-MO) called on their colleagues in the Senate to pass Association Health Plan (AHP) legislation to bring competition, and ultimately lower costs, to markets dominated by just a few large companies.

"All small businesses are looking for is the same bargaining power that large employers and union employers already have - by joining together in AHPs, they will be able to purchase health insurance at lower rates through bulk purchasing power. AHPs represent a fair, fiscally sound, and tested approach to reducing ranks of America's 45 million uninsured."

Simply put, medical expenses for emergency treatment outside of Canada can be costly and your provincial health plan may only cover a small portion of them.

"Without competition, small business men and women who offer health insurance to their workers have two choices when facing higher health care costs: pay or drop the coverage. It's no wonder two-thirds of the uninsured either own a small business, work for one or are dependent on someone who does. The Senate could end this unfairness by allowing small businesses to join together nationally through their trade associations to sponsor health insurance."

Studies by the General Accounting Office and the Congressional Budget Office have found that AHPs operate with between 13 percent and 30 percent lower administrative costs.

AHPs would be closely monitored and regulated by the Department of Labor's Employee Benefits Security Administration in the same way that the Labor Department currently oversees health plans covering 78 million people.

Trading Stock And Bonds In May, Snowe, Bond and Talent requested that the GAO follow-up on a 2002 report on the number and market share of carriers in the small group health insurance market. GAO's latest report found that the market share of the largest small group carriers has significantly increased since 2002, and highlights in detail how small businesses have extremely limited or no choices when shopping for health insurance for their employees. The GAO found that the five largest carriers in the small group market, when combined, represented three-quarters or more of the market in 26 of the 34 states supplying information, and they represented 90 percent or more in 12 of these states.
