GOP Leader Proposes Public Vote On Gas Tax

Bond In Investing Savings The state Senate's top Republican yesterday proposed asking voters whether to approve increasing New Jersey's gasoline tax to pay for state transportation projects, but the governor's office said it's not interested in the proposal because it rejects any increase.

    -- Some members of the Legislature are proposing increasing the tax on cigarettes from 33 cents to $1 per pack. Others want to increase the alcohol beverage tax by a nickel per drink. The governor has proposed increasing the cigarette tax from 33 cents to 63 cents and raising the tax on other tobacco products by 10 percent. He has also proposed increasing the alcohol beverage tax and increasing some filing fees.

Bond Investment Toledo Toledo Senate Minority Leader Leonard Lance, R-Clinton Township, didn't express support for increasing the tax, saying doing so would be "unfortunate," but said any proposal to increase the 14.5-cents-per-gallon levy should be decided by the public.

James Bond Trading Card "If we're to do so, it only should be with the support of the public in a general election," Lance said during a Senate Budget Committee hearing in Trenton on the administration's proposed $2.9 billion in state transportation spending.

As for crossing a state line to buy cheaper gas, the price of gas now may actually make staying put a better option. "With gas averaging nearly $3 a gallon nationwide, your car would have to get phenomenal mileage to justify driving any distance just to save a few cents per gallon on the gas tax, " said Schibley. Municipal Bonds Investment In December, McGreevey rejected increasing the tax, saying economic uncertainty made it the "wrong time" to consider an increase. Instead, McGreevey ordered Transportation Commissioner Jack Lettiere to prioritize spending with available money.

A tax on unhealthy foods has recently been proposed by a think tank associated with the Government. Although the Government has apparently rejected the idea, it is not without support amongst certain economists and public health advocates. An article by Tom Marshall was published in the British Medical Journal which advocated a tax on the main sources of fat in the British diet namely butter, whole milk, cheese, biscuits and cakes. He contended that such a measure could prevent around 1000 premature deaths a year in the UK from heart related diseases.

Bond Terms Trading The proposed budget for the next fiscal year, which starts July 1, continues to rely on Transportation Trust Fund money, but Lettiere said the state will issue $900 million in grant anticipation bonds, commonly called Garvee bonds, in the 2006 fiscal year if no solution has been found to replenish the trust fund.

Bond Houston Houston Democrats on the Senate Budget Committee never got the chance to debate Lance's proposal. Sen. Sharpe James, D-Newark, who was presiding over the panel when Lance proposed his idea, would neither allow Lettiere to respond nor other senators to discuss it.

Stock Bonds Day Trading "There is no testimony today, no proposal before us today on a gasoline tax," James said. "It is an inappropriate question at this time."

Bond Dayton Dayton Investment Sen. Thomas H. Kean Jr., R-Westfield, expressed concern about the bond plan and questioned whether the state could issue them without the Legislature's approval.

Bond Management Market Risk Lettiere said the state didn't need legislative approval because the legislation that created the Transportation Trust Fund Authority gave it the right to issue bonds. He said the Legislature would have to approve money to repay the bonds.
