Vernon Prepares To Put Park Project Up For Vote

Bond In Investing Savings A $2 million referendum to create a park in Vernon is advancing toward being placed on the November ballot. Responding to a petition that repealed $4.7 million in bonds to develop a park on Maple Grange Road, the township council reduced the project to $2 million and is preparing to present the scaled- back plan to voters in a binding referendum in the Nov. 5 general election.

This project smelled rotten from the start, when NJ Transit waited until its board endorsed the project before scheduling public hearings. There also was the question about whether the public should have had the chance to vote on the bonds financing the project.

Bond Investment Toledo Toledo "We reduced it by more than half to get the project moving," Mayor John Logan said. "Before, the way it was structured was that some opponents could say 'Yes, I'm in favor of a park, but they're trying to do too much at once.' Now, it's 'Are you in favor of a park or not?' There's no gray area. It's black and white."

All of this was considered "Phase 1" of a multi-phase plan that would take several years to carry out.

Bond Explained Terms Trading The new $2 million plan for Phase 1 involves building about five fields, Logan said, while amenities such as snack bar/pavilion and restrooms have been eliminated.

Bond Houston Houston If the referendum passes, construction on fields would begin in the spring, and the council would start undertaking Phase 2 plans for the park, the mayor said.

Bond In Investing Municipal The last time Vernon built recreational fields was in the late 1970s, when The Flats recreational complex on Vernon Crossing Road was constructed.

Future Bond Trading System The council is planning to raise about $100,000 a year to offset park maintenance costs by leasing to Verizon a cell tower on the park property, Logan said. The tower will be a flagpole, similar to one at Victoria's restaurant on Route 23 in the Stockholm section of Hardyston.

Bond In Investing Junk Some residents have expressed concerns about recent land clearing that took place to make way for a cell tower, but Logan said, "everything we've done is legal and appropriate."
