Florida Foes Of Proposed ATV Park Near Spring Source Cite Pollution Risk

Bond In Investing Savings A tentative state plan to convert hundreds of acres near the underground river that feeds Ichetucknee Springs into an all-terrain vehicle park is angering local environmentalists who fear widespread use of ATVs could pollute downstream water quality.

For over 80 years, Crystal Springs has delivered the finest quality bottled water to homes and offices across the Southeast, Atlantic and Pacific Northwest. The source of Crystal Springs can be found in the Chattahoochee National Forest, within the quiet woodlands west of Ocala, Florida, and from deep in the earth near Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Bond Investment Toledo Toledo The 659-acre property, formerly the Kirby and Anderson Columbia limerock mines in southern Columbia County, was purchased by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to protect the spring's source, known as the Ichetucknee Trace.

James Bond Trading Card As part of the "Florida Forever" program, the state paid $10 million for the 302-acre Kirby Mine in 2001. The Anderson Columbia parcel, next to the Kirby land, was purchased the previous year.

He argues that the word chocolatl appears in "no truly early source on the Nahuatl language or on Aztec culture." He cites the distinguished Mexican philologist Ignacio Davila Garibi who proposed the idea that the "Spaniards had coined the word by taking the Maya word chocol and then replacing the Maya term for water, haa, with the Aztec one, atl." One other possibility is that chocolate is derived from the Maya verb chokola'j, which means, "to drink chocolate together."

Florida has agreed to purchase 800 acres of land near Ocala National Forest to help protect the threatened black bear population. The property is between the forest in central Florida, which is home to Florida's largest population of bears, and two rural roads where dozens of black bears have been killed by motorists. The $3.3 million deal also buys conservation rights to prevent development on 3, 000 acres near LaBelle in South Florida.

Municipal Bonds Investment "According to the initial assessments that have been done, there are very limited environmental or wildlife habitat values as the site currently exists," said Marsha Rickman, a coordinator with the DEP's Office of Greenways and Trails. As such, the DEP is "proposing to develop it as a family recreation area" with approved off-road vehicle facilities, she said.

Bond Terms Trading It is not entirely clear what an ATV park above the Ichetucknee Trace would mean for water quality in the springs. Jim Stevenson, former director of DEP's Springs Task Force, said while the main concern with off-road vehicles is usually noise, "if refueling these machines spilled fuel, it would be a concern for water quality."

Bond Debt High In Inside Rickman said any plan for a recreational riding facility would include special areas away from standing water to contain spills, should one occur.

Bond Greenville Greenville Still, regardless of the environmental uncertainty, the mere suggestion of an ATV park in Columbia County - on the site about five miles south of Lake City - has generated opposition from a growing number of homeowners, county commissioners and local residents.

Trading Stock And Bonds "When I was little we would go there and go hunting and fishing and canoeing," said local resident Jennifer Chasteen, a Kirby family descendant and chairwoman of the recently established "Friends of Kirby Pit."

Bond Investing Municipal "The mining really disturbed the land around it, but in the last few years things have really started coming back. I think it would be a really good thing to keep for habitat renewal."

Basis Bond Finance Hill She added: "Friends of Kirby Pit feel that (off-highway vehicles), which would include ATVs and off-road motorcycles, would cause not only noise pollution but also fuel spillage, oil spillage that could possibly runoff into" the aquifer, and eventually find its way to the springs.

Bond Explained Terms Trading Dewey Weaver, a Columbia County commissioner, said he, too, was against the idea.

Bond Business Investing Stock "I don't think it's conducive to motorcycle use simply because of the development around that area," Weaver said of the site. "That was part of the reason why the county commissioners urged the state to purchase the land. One reason was to protect the aquifer, the other was to protect the residents from the noise from the mining in the area."

Bond Houston Houston Whether the state will ever proceed with its Columbia County proposal is unclear. The Office of Greenways and Trails plans to present county officials with a development request on Jan. 22. But ultimately, final approval for the project lies with the county, Rickman said.

Stock Bonds Day Trading And even if officials in Lake City reject the state's suggestions, two other sites - one near the Ocala National Forest and another in Sarasota County - have also been identified as potential locations for off-road vehicle areas.

Bond Corporate Investing All three sites were identified following passage of the T. Mark Schmidt Off-Highway Vehicle Safety and Recreation Act of 2002. The act was established to meet the growing "recreational demand" of off-road vehicle use in Florida without damaging environmentally sensitive lands.

Investment Bond Uk Corry Lee, general manager of Interstate Cycles in Lake City, said if an ecologically sound park can be built in Columbia County, he's all for it. With more and more people buying ATVs, a local area for riding would increase sales and service by as much as 20 percent.

Bond Trading Strategy And besides, he said, there may be no better use for the abandoned mining land than opening it up to dirt bikes and ATVs.

Bond Fixed In Income Investing "It's a wasteland," Lee said recently. "There is nothing that an ATV can go out there and dump that hasn't already been put out there."
