Men's soccer loses on road, wins at home

Date 9/30/2004 12:00 AM | Topic: Sports

The men's soccer team salvaged a disappointing week with a win over the Macalester Scots 3-1 Sunday.

The Norse lost two games on the road: one to the Carleton Knights 1-0 last Wednesday, and the second to the Simpson Storm 2-1 Saturday.

"We expected better [out of that game]," said Coach Doug Mello. "We never rewarded ourselves with the chances we had."

The Norse had only three shots on goal as they were shut out by the Knights' Brian Aleinikoff.

"Our passing was superb; we stretched them out," said Mello. "We just didn't take many quality shots."

The one Carleton goal was scored late in the game by David Watson. There was no assist on the shot.

"It was a lucky shot," said Mello. "We outplayed them. It was very, very disappointing."

The goalkeeper for the Norse, Leif Madsen ('08), allowed one goal with five saves. The defense held the Knights to six shots on goal.

"Madsen had some nice saves," said Mello. "[The game] was a tight defensive battle."

The team was slowed down by injuries. Andrew Best ('06) is day-to-day with a leg injury, and senior William Nartey's playing time has been reduced because of a leg injury.

Against Simpson, the first half was scoreless. After the half, the Norse struck first on a score by Eric Henderson ('05) after being fed the ball from Brad Reid ('08).

The Storm evened it up 1-1 on a penalty kick by Nate Ruhland. Then, in the second overtime, Ryan Chase assisted Jesse Kaufman to score the winning goal for the Storm.

Madsen had seven saves and allowed two goals. The defense allowed 10 shots on goal.

Simpson goalkeeper Greg Velasquez allowed one goal with 10 saves. The Storm defense allowed eleven shots on goal.

The Norse then returned home and hosted Macalester on Sunday. Once again, both teams broke for halftime scoreless.

It wouldn't last long as Jordan Hartman ('05) scored 20 seconds into the second half on a penalty kick after a hand-ball was called in the box.

Macalester answered a minute and a half later on a goal by their top scorer, Michael Blythe, to tie the score one apiece.

Mo Norman ('08) then scored fewer than five minutes later, putting the Norse in the lead for the rest of the game.

Later, Henderson scored an insurance goal, his eighth of the year, off an assist by Steve Kain ('07).

Henderson leads the Norse with eight goals and one assist for a total of 17 points. Nartey and Jeremiah Reinkoester ('05) are next with five points each.

Madsen accumulated eight saves while allowing just one goal. The defense allowed 10 shots on goal.

For the Scots, goalie Dan Schroeder allowed three goals with five saves. The defense allowed eight shots on goal.

"All our games are against strong opponents," said Mello. "[The games] are going to be hard fought."
